Alternative font to Helvetica, DIN, Gotham and the like
Actium is a contemporary multilingual sans serif typeface developed to help perfect typography automatically. Its design has an unusual diagonal contrast – much more common in a serifed face than in a sans serif – giving it more bite. The typeface looks elegant when set in large sizes and remains very legible when shown in small sizes. Give it a try yourself above and experience the smooth curves.
Actium’s italic is more dynamic than its roman.
While slanted romans and hybrid italics are still common for sans serifs designed today, Actium comes with true italics. Whereas Actium’s roman style is modest, subtle and minimal, the italic is more expressive and has a warmer tone. The italics are mainly designed for the use of emphasising short sections in roman text, however, it also works well as secondary type.
Anti clashing alternates
Instead of hundreds ligatures, just a couple alternative characters were designed. Where characters otherwise would clash with their neighbours, these combinations are replaced with alternates. The additional advantage of these alternates is that it would have less affect on text setting than ligatures, if you tighten the white space by tracking text. For a couple of exceptional cases ligatures come to the rescue.
A particular issue that has drawn our attention are the problems of using capital letters and numbers together. When capitals are combined with old-style numerals in words like WD40, U2 and H1N5 they jump out of the text. They sit awkwardly together as the numerals have been designed to work with the lowercase, not the uppercase letters.
The solution is ‘Smart Capo’ – an OpenType feature we developed for our typeface Actium, that automatically activates once you type an uppercase letter together with a number. The numerals and capitals switch to mid-height versions that were designed to sit comfortably next to each other. This saves time for the typographer and makes it a more pleasurable experience for the reader.
A feature that improves the appearance and readability of alphanumeric words in text, by adjusting their height automatically. This works for any sequences of capitals and numbers combined – whether acronyms, product names or flight numbers – and capitalised words without numbers: taking the pain out of text formatting and saving you time and money.
Designed to line up halfway between x-height and cap height, mid caps are a contemporary alternative to small caps. They don’t dominate the text and work in harmony with the numbers, so they fit perfectly into the Smart Capo concept.
Multiple figure sets allow you to select the right set of numbers for the right task.
Four sets of numerals can easily be switched between when using OpenType-enabled applications. Each font features old-style and lining figures in both proportional and tabular widths, plus superiors and inferiors. These allow you to select the right set of numbers for the right task. The lining figures work in harmony with the mid caps.
Actium boasts an extended Latin character set and a Greek. That means a wide range of Western languages are supported: perfect for use in bilingual publications and packaging.
Full list of supported languages: Bosnian, Croatian, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Esperanto, Estonian, Faroese, Finnish, French, German, Greek modern, Hawaiian, Hungarian, Icelandic, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Norwegian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Welsh.
Six weights in two styles, making a dozen fonts. Weights range from light to black in roman and true italic. This allows for several levels of hierarchy or subtle emphasis in sections of your text. You can rely on Actium to help get your message across.
All Type Mafia typefaces are built as OpenType format, a cross-platform font format which can used on either a Mac or PC. Actium’s features allows easy activation of typographic elements, such as switching between figures-sets, in OpenType ready applications such as Adobe Indesign.
OpenType features: SmartCapo, anti clashing alternates, ligatures, four sets of figures plus superiors and inferiors, fractions, mid capitals, case sensitive punctuation.

Perfecting typography automatically
Actium is the first ever typeface sporting Smart Capo, a feature that improves the appearance and readability of alphanumeric words in text, by adjusting their height automatically. This works for any sequences of capitals and numbers combined – whether acronyms, product names or flight numbers – and capitalised words without numbers: taking the pain out of text formatting and saving you time and money.
Remember: The licence is a contract between you and us. When you purchase, in fact you’re licensing the use of the fonts; you’re not owning them because we, the mafia, do. Please take a look at the licence agreement – it defines your rights, the acceptable uses of our fonts, and the rights we, the mafia, reserve.
